Harkins is well known for his position as Cylance's chief security and trust officer and Intel Corporation's vice president and chief security and privacy officer. He was in charge of all of Intel's information assets, products, and services' risk, safeguards, privacy, security, and other enforcement activities. Cymatic currently employs Harkins in the same capacity.

He was also awarded the Innovation in the Area of Security award by the RSA Conference. Harkins is a Fellow at the Institute for Vital Infrastructure Technologies, an independent think tank that advises the House, Senate, and various government agencies on cybersecurity.
