Wibu-Systems has joined the ProCloud3D research project with important German and Chinese industrial partners and leading academic players.
FREMONT, CA: Wibu-Systems, a renowned IT security leader at the service of connected industry, has joined the ProCloud3D research project with important German and Chinese industrial partners and leading academic players, such as Germany's RWTH Aachen University and China's Beijing University of Technology. The company is incorporating the idea of a smarter manufacturing sector to the assessment with a high-performance platform for industrial-scale additive manufacturing that keeps the most intangible but most tangible resources, designs, and production data safe and secure, regardless of where and who makes the actual products. ProCloud3D is set to be a milestone demonstration of the powerful vision of Industry 4.0 and the China Strategy 2015 to 2020 program, having been chosen as one of two projects in the running for funding support from both China's Ministry of Science and Technology and Germany's Ministry of Education and Research.
Academic researchers and commercial firms, both household names and ambitious new startups, are exploring what this means in practice as conventional manufacturing gives way to new forms of doing business in the industry. Smarter, connected machines have figured out how to make even highly customized goods in both large production runs and severely limited editions, due to their new versatility, which enables them to skip most of that labor-intensive retooling and set-up that had previously kept factories connected to producing a single thing and in large quantities. With industrial 3D printers stretching the boundaries of what customization might entail, several commercial calculations and business models that manufacturers have relied on since the third industrial revolution have been turned upside down.

The platform is built around a web interface that allows users to access the technology database, which has all the necessary data, drawings, and code to make parts on the ground.
To get to the 3D printer, which could be on the other side of the world, the data are transmitted and processed in a holistically automated process chain. ProCloud3D manages the entire process from a client ordering a production service through the secure processing and transmission of the essential data. Its translation into basic operating instructions for the additive manufacturing service provider.
